The Binding of Knots – Irish Knot Magic in Witchcraft

Updated: Nov 26, 2025

“A cord is a spell, a knot is a seal.” So the ancients understood, and so we remember.

In The Ancient Irish Craft, the art of knot-making was never only practical. A cord tied around a bundle, a knot securing a garment, a weaving in rope—each held the potential for magic. For in the simple act of twisting and binding, the witch wove intention into matter, shaping unseen forces into visible form.

Every knot was more than thread—it was a seal of power, memory, and will.

Knots as Protection and Power

Knots were often tied at thresholds, doorways, or hearths to lock harmful forces outside the home. A simple loop of thread, twisted and tied with intention, could stand guard more fiercely than iron.

Certain spells called for nine knots, each one tied with a whispered word of binding, release, or love. A cord of nine knots was worn close to the body to hold desire or devotion, to secure protection, or to entangle harmful intent before it reached its mark.

The untying of knots was just as sacred as their making. To loosen a knot was to release energy—to break a curse, dissolve an oath, or free a spell whose work was done.
